Background

He became General Manager of the Group Management Promotion Department in June 2020. In April 2021, as Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Officer, he took charge of group corporate planning and public relations, and in January 2022 became Chairman of the Chinese operating company SQUARE ENIX (China) CO., LTD., joining the board in June of that year. The same officer list included Yoshinori Kitase, head of Creative Business Unit I, and Yu Miyake, head of Creative Business Unit II, so his appointment drew on someone in charge of corporate planning and financial strategy with no development background.

Before becoming President of the holding company, he became Representative Director and President of the operating company Square Enix in May 2023. Initiatives

In May 2024 he announced the mid-term management plan 'Square Enix Reboots and Awakens' (FY ending March 2025 to FY ending March 2027). While the previous plan had sold three overseas studios and some IP, the new plan cited the low profitability of the HD games business and insufficient portfolio management as issues. In development he called for a 'shift from quantity to quality,' abolishing the business-unit system and reorganizing into an integrated structure with development functions at the core. In the FY ended March 2026, consolidated net sales were ¥297.7 billion and operating income ¥54.7 billion.
