Background

He joined Kansai Electric Power in 1960 and, after posts including a secondment to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, became Executive Vice President in June 1999. Kansai Electric's executive ranks were filled almost entirely by internal promotion: apart from Mitsuhiro Iwata, who came in via an advisory post after serving as Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency, the President, Executive Vice Presidents and Managing Directors listed in the annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2006 had all joined between 1963 and 1972. In a company that filled its executive posts without bringing in outsiders, Fuji was one of those who rose from within.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering (1960)

Selection

In June 2001 he succeeded Hiroshi Ishikawa, moving from Executive Vice President to President. Kansai Electric had a run of promotions from Executive Vice President; his successor Shosuke Mori, too, joined in 1963, became Executive Vice President in June 2001 and President in June 2005. In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2002, consolidated revenue was ¥2,651.5 billion and ordinary profit ¥159.6 billion.

Initiatives

In August 2004 an accident occurred at Unit 3 of the Mihama Power Station in which secondary system piping ruptured. The response extended to shutting down all the company's nuclear power stations and reorganizing the support subsidiaries responsible for maintenance. Over his four years in office, consolidated ordinary profit rose from ¥159.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002 to ¥297.8 billion in the FY ended March 2005, while net income fell from ¥128.4 billion to ¥69.7 billion. He stepped down as President in June 2005, handing over to Executive Vice President Shosuke Mori.
