Background

He joined the company in April 1974, became an Executive Officer in April 2003 and a Director in June that year. He rose to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2007 and Representative Director and President in April 2009, 35 years after joining and six years after becoming a Director. After the move to a holding company structure in April 2013, he served as President of ANA HOLDINGS INC.

Education: Kyushu University, Faculty of Economics (1974)

Selection

In April 2009 he succeeded Mineo Yamamoto as President. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2009, revenue was ¥1,392.5 billion, operating profit ¥7.6 billion and ordinary profit ¥0.1 billion, with a net loss of ¥4.2 billion. Operating profit had fallen to less than a tenth of the previous year's ¥84.4 billion. The appointment appears to have handed the company, amid shrinking demand, to a career employee who had spent two years as Executive Vice President.

Initiatives

In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2010, losses deepened, with revenue of ¥1,228.3 billion, an operating loss of ¥54.2 billion and a net loss of ¥57.3 billion. In April 2013 the company moved to a holding company structure through a company split and changed its name to ANA HOLDINGS INC., with the airline business taken over by the newly separated All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. In the FY ended March 2015, his final year, revenue was ¥1,713.4 billion and operating profit ¥91.5 billion, rebuilt from the ¥7.6 billion operating profit of the year before his appointment.
