Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in 1922 and joined the Bank of Japan; in May 1939, as a counselor, he also served as a director of the Huaxing Commercial Bank in Shanghai, and in November 1942 he moved to the Ministry of Greater East Asia as a counselor. After the war his career lay in finance and management, as President of Ikegai Iron Works from August 1949 and of Maruzen Oil from October 1951. He was invited to join Japan Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports, the predecessor of All Nippon Airways, as Executive Vice President at its founding in December 1952, and spent nine years in that post before becoming President.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law) (1922)

Selection

The first President was Masuichi Midoro of the Asahi Shimbun; a Japanese corporate directory lists Midoro as President through its 1961 edition, with Kaheita Okazaki taking over from the 1962 edition. The company had merged with Far East Airlines in March 1958 and had just listed on the Second Sections of the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges in June 1961, securing funds for aircraft purchases. In the fiscal year ended March 1961 the major shareholders were Japan Airlines with 19.5% and Nagoya Railroad with 7.2%, and rather than bringing in a President from an investor, the company promoted its Executive Vice President of the founding years.

Initiatives

In November 1963 the company absorbed Fujita Airlines, and in March 1965 it introduced the Boeing 727, increasing capacity on trunk routes. Revenue was ¥17.0 billion with ordinary profit of ¥0.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1966, but the following FY ended March 1967 turned to revenue of ¥16.3 billion, an ordinary loss of ¥1.8 billion and a net loss of ¥1.7 billion, and his departure coincided with this loss-making year. During his tenure, in March 1964, he became chairman of the Liaison Council for Comprehensive Japan-China Trade and handled Japan-China trade negotiations outside the company.
