Background

He joined Nichimen Jitsugyo in August 1960, was sent as a trainee to US Leasing, a partner before the company's founding, to learn leasing in practice, and on returning was dispatched to the preparatory committee for establishing Orient Leasing. Having studied at Kwansei Gakuin University's School of Commerce and earned an MBA from the business graduate school of the University of Washington, he became Director and head of the President's Office at 32. He advanced to Managing Director in November 1973, Senior Managing Director in May 1976 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in December 1979.

Education: Kwansei Gakuin University, Faculty of Commerce; University of Washington, Faculty of Business Administration, Graduate School, Master's Program, MBA (1958, 1960)

Selection

In December 1980, at 45, he replaced Tsuneo Inui as President, and Inui became Chairman. Ordinary profit had fallen for two straight years, from ¥7.2 billion in the fiscal year ended September 1978 to ¥4.8 billion in the FY ended September 1979 and ¥3.1 billion in the FY ended September 1980. Lease contract volume topped ¥700 billion in the FY ended September 1984, putting the company first in the industry, but rate competition from new entrants such as regional banks and credit unions drove the ordinary margin down into the 2% range. The change appears to have had Miyauchi, involved since the preparations for the founding, reshape a business whose profitability was thinning even as it stayed on top.

Initiatives

In March 1986 the company took a stake in Osaka Ichioka Securities, entering the securities business, and in October 1988 it bought the professional baseball team Hankyu Braves. In April 1989, marking its 25th anniversary, it changed its name to ORIX Corporation, using the name to signal diversification into financial services on the grounds that "leasing company" no longer described what it did. In March 1991 it set up an aircraft leasing base in Ireland, and in April that year entered life insurance. In April 1998 it acquired Yamaichi Trust and Bank, and in September that year listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
