Background

He graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Economics in March 1933, joined the Thirty-Fourth Bank (later Sanwa Bank), and became Director and New York branch manager in May 1963. Orient Leasing was founded on April 17, 1964, with capital from three trading companies, Nichimen Jitsugyo, Nissho and Iwai Sangyo, and from Sanwa Bank and four other banks. Inui moved over as Representative Director and Executive Vice President at the founding and took on day-to-day management in place of Keizo Fukui, President of Nichimen Jitsugyo, who doubled as the first President.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Economics (1933)

Selection

In August 1967 he was promoted to President, replacing Keizo Fukui, who had doubled as the first President. In its third year the company sent all seconded staff back to their investor companies and switched to a workforce of its own employees only. Sales of ¥5 million in the fiscal year ended September 1964 grew to ¥1.7 billion in the FY ended September 1967. As the company, started with borrowed secondees, became a self-standing organization, the change appears to have replaced a part-time President with a full-time executive.

Initiatives

Executives of major shareholders Sanwa Bank and Nichimen complained that the company had not been founded in order to list, but he persuaded them and brought it to an IPO. The listing was on the Second Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange, in April 1970. The first overseas base was Hong Kong in September 1971, followed by Malaysia in September 1973 and Indonesia in April 1975. In 1973 the company issued Asian dollar bonds, a first for a Japanese company. At home it kept setting up subsidiaries: after Orient Leasing Interior in 1972 came companies for auto leasing, measuring instrument rental and consumer credit.
