Background

A mid-career hire, he joined Nikko Securities in April 1968 and moved to Orient Leasing in November 1976. After serving as General Manager of Real Estate Sales, of Credit Department No. 1 and of General Affairs, he became a Director in June 1994. He became Director and Executive Officer in June 1998 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 1999, joining top management by way of hands-on work in real estate and credit.

Education: Waseda University, Faculty of Commerce (1968)

Selection

In April 2000 Yoshihiko Miyauchi moved to Chairman and Group CEO, and Fujiki became President and Group COO. Under a division of roles in which Vice Chairman Katsuaki Ishida handled overseas and Fujiki domestic business, Fujiki explained the shift to collective leadership with shared responsibility by saying that no single person could oversee a financial services business that had grown so broad, including overseas. The fiscal year ended March 1999 marked a fourth straight year of higher consolidated profits, and the share price hit an all-time high of ¥13,330 in July 1999.

Initiatives

In June 2002, when an analyst at Deutsche Securities issued a 45-page report criticizing the company's earnings composition and disclosure, it rebutted on the 26th, and on July 15 held a briefing for about 270 institutional investors and analysts. In June 2003 it moved to a company-with-committees structure following revision of the old Commercial Code. In June 2004 it agreed to merge the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes into its own Orix BlueWave.
