Handing the company to an outsider from Mitsubishi Corporation (2024)
Where the bet on an outside hire leads
What marks this succession is that the top job went not to a successor raised inside over decades but to a man who had come from a trading house eighteen months earlier. Behind the outside appointment appears to lie a recognition that the problem of concentration in one domestic market is hard to solve by thinking along internal lines. From the founding family to a career insider, and then to an outside professional manager — Sangetsu’s leadership has opened one step outward each decade. That a wholesaler with strong family colouring had modernized its governance enough to entrust the next ten years to someone from outside shows the preparation done under Yasuda.
Two years of results, though, do not yet settle whether the succession worked. The record figures came with tailwinds — price revisions and currency — and the outside appointment will ultimately be judged on whether the long-standing structural problem of domestic concentration is actually solved. It will take time for exteriors, overseas and integrated space proposals to grow to a scale comparable with domestic interiors. How far a trading-house executive can rewrite the structure of an interiors group remains a question to be watched as the outcome of the next medium-term plan.
