Selection

In June 2021 it came to light that, for air conditioning units for railway cars at the Nagasaki Works, inspections differing from customer-specified conditions and the creation of fictitious reports without any inspection had continued for more than 30 years since the 1980s. The misconduct had not been found in earlier company-wide re-examinations, and on July 2 that year Takeshi Sugiyama announced his resignation to take responsibility. On July 28, Kei Uruma, an Executive Vice President with an administrative background who joined in 1982, was promoted to President and CEO.

Initiatives

In October 2021 he established a Quality Reform Promotion Headquarters reporting directly to the president and placed quality assurance supervision departments at every works. In April 2022 he created four business areas: Infrastructure, Industry and Mobility, Life, and Business Platform. In March 2023 the company announced it would double cumulative capital expenditure on power devices from about ¥130.0 billion to about ¥260.0 billion, of which about ¥100.0 billion would go to SiC wafers. In April 2024 it spun off the automotive equipment business to establish Mitsubishi Electric Mobility, and in April 2026 began considering joint operation with a view to accepting a 50% investment from Hon Hai Precision Industry.
