Background

He joined the company in 1969 and became a Director in charge of the automotive equipment business in June 2001. From 2003 he also took charge of the building systems business, and in April 2004, as Representative Executive Officer and Senior Executive Vice President, was in charge of building systems. He was promoted not from semiconductors or information and communications but from responsibility for automotive equipment and building systems, businesses built on installation and mass production.

Selection

In April 2006 he succeeded Tamotsu Nomaguchi as Representative Executive Officer and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2006, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,604.1 billion, operating income ¥157.7 billion and net income ¥95.6 billion; the change came after four years of restoring earning power from ¥3,648.9 billion in FY ended March 2002. At a Mitsubishi Electric that had carved out its semiconductors, the task of choosing which business to grow next passed to the executive responsible for automotive equipment and building systems.

Initiatives

During his tenure, in the fiscal year ended March 2008, the company posted consolidated net sales of ¥4,049.8 billion and operating income of ¥267.2 billion. The Lehman shock cut results to ¥3,665.1 billion and ¥139.7 billion in FY ended March 2009 and ¥3,353.2 billion and ¥94.3 billion in FY ended March 2010, but the company stayed in the black at the net level in both years.
