Background
He joined the company in 1977 and served as manager of the Power Systems Works. He became Executive Officer and Senior Vice President in 2008, Executive Officer, Executive Vice President and Director in 2010, and Representative Executive Officer and Senior Executive Vice President in 2012, becoming president in April 2014. Of the semiconductor restructuring, he later explained that moving DRAM to Elpida Memory and system LSIs and microcontrollers to Renesas Technology had kept the company out of the red even during the Lehman shock.

In April 2014 he succeeded Kenichiro Yamanishi as Representative Executive Officer and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2014, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥4,054.3 billion and income before taxes ¥249.0 billion, a recovery from FY ended March 2013, when it had fallen to ¥65.1 billion. The company had set targets of ¥5 trillion in net sales and an operating margin above 8% for fiscal 2020, and he was entrusted with achieving them.
Initiatives
He kept up withdrawals from at least one business every year, and in April 2016 transferred the profitable mobile phone sales company. In February 2016 the company made DeLclima, an Italian commercial air conditioning company, a wholly owned subsidiary. The October 2022 final report on quality misconduct also found involvement by Masaki Sakuyama during his time as a section manager.
