Background

He took the entrance exam and joined Mitsubishi Electric in 1934, reporting to the Nagasaki Works in April 1935, where he handled controllers in the design section. He lived in Nagasaki for 34 years in total, working in heavy electrical design and on the shop floor. In November 1964, when Ken Okubo became president, he was chosen as Director and head of the Heavy Electrical Division, became Managing Director in November 1966 while also serving as head of Engineering and acting head of Research, and in 1968 added acting head of Management Information.

Education: Kyushu Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering (now Kyushu University) (1933)

Selection

In November 1968 Chairman Yoshinaga Seki told him he would be the next president. Because before the war the Mitsubishi group permitted the title of president only at the head company, he wrote that counting from founding Chairman Hideo Takeda he was the seventh in line. He became president in November 1970, succeeding Ken Okubo. At the time there were even rumors that Mitsubishi Electric would quit home appliances, and after taking office he toured dealers across the country.

Initiatives

In October 1971, in response to deteriorating results, he launched the company-wide "Operation 101" crisis campaign, focusing on revising sales policy and dealing with unprofitable models. In the fiscal period ended September 1973, net sales were 35% higher and ordinary income 2.1 times higher than in the period ended September 1971. In April 1972 he set up the Semiconductor Division to strengthen production and sales. He established a Sales Group in June 1975 and four business groups for heavy electrical, electronics, equipment and consumer products in June 1977, and non-consolidated net sales reached ¥1,075.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1980.
