Background

He joined the company in 1979 and served as president of the Thai subsidiary and manager of the Mobile Terminal Works. He became Executive Officer and Senior Vice President in April 2014 and Executive Officer and Executive Vice President in April 2016, then Representative Executive Officer and President in April 2018. He was promoted from an executive post with experience in both domestic mass-production bases and overseas sales.

Education: Nagoya University, Faculty of Engineering (1979)

Selection

In April 2018 he succeeded Masaki Sakuyama as Representative Executive Officer and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥4,444.4 billion and operating income ¥364.6 billion, the highest operating income of his predecessor's tenure. However, more than ¥420.0 billion, about 40% of cumulative capital expenditure over the preceding five years, had gone to the Industrial Mechatronics segment, which handled FA systems and automotive equipment.

Initiatives

At a management strategy briefing in June 2020, he projected operating income of ¥120.0 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2021, less than half the previous year's, with the operating margin falling from 5.8% to 2.9%, short of the 8%-plus target of the mid-term management plan in its final year. Operating income in the Industrial Mechatronics segment was projected to fall from ¥187.4 billion in FY ended March 2018 (restated under IFRS) to ¥13.0 billion in FY ended March 2021. In June 2021 it came to light that fictitious inspection reports for air conditioning units for railway cars at the Nagasaki Works had been produced for more than 30 years since the 1980s, and on July 2 that year he announced his resignation to take responsibility.
