Background
He joined Mitsubishi Materials in April 1977 and became Managing Executive Officer and head of the Legal Division in April 2009, and Managing Director that June. He rose to Executive Vice President in April 2014 and President in April 2015. He entered top management after leading the legal function rather than a business company.
Selection
In April 2015 he succeeded Hiroshi Yao as President. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2015, consolidated net sales were ¥1,517.2 billion, operating profit ¥71.9 billion and net income ¥56.1 billion, all above the prior year's ¥1,414.7 billion, ¥66.3 billion and ¥52.5 billion. He took office after only a year as Executive Vice President, in a change made while results were growing.
Initiatives
Consolidated net sales moved from ¥1,517.2 billion in FY ended March 2015 to ¥1,599.5 billion in FY ended March 2018, but net income fell from ¥56.1 billion to ¥34.5 billion. Along the way, in FY ended March 2017, net sales dropped to ¥1,304.0 billion and net income to ¥28.3 billion. Late in his tenure, in 2017, falsification of quality data at subsidiaries came to light, and he chose to disclose it. In June 2018 he stepped down as President and moved to Chairman.
