Background

Mitsubishi Mining was designated under the Excessive Economic Power Deconcentration Law in February 1948, and in April 1950 transferred its three divisions, mining, smelting and metal processing, to a second company, Taihei Mining, which became independent with capital of ¥700 million. Seiichi Komura served as Executive Vice President of Taihei Mining and became President in 1956, a change in the sixth year after independence.

Education: Tokyo Higher Commercial School (now Hitotsubashi University) (1917)

Selection

In 1956 he succeeded Michiyuki Hani as President. As of September 1955 the major shareholders were, in order, Mitsubishi Trust, Meiji Life, Nippon Life, Sumitomo Trust and Daiwa Bank: only financial institutions, no operating companies, at the top. This was the shareholder base left after the former zaibatsu holding company's stakes were released in its dissolution, and he was handed management without a parent company holding a controlling stake.

Initiatives

After changing its name in December 1952, Mitsubishi Metal Mining set up the Akita smelter in December 1953 and bought the Myoho mine in October 1954, expanding its smelting and mining facilities. Komura's presidency, from 1956 to March 1960, carried on this expansion, and the next investments came after he stepped down, with the founding of Mitsubishi Reynolds Aluminium in January 1962 and Onahama Smelting in December 1963. The structure resting on three pillars, mining, smelting and processing, took hold during this period.
