Background
He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering of Kyoto Imperial University in 1938, joined Mitsubishi Mining, and became head of the processing department of Mitsubishi Metal Mining in June 1962. He became a Director in May 1963, a Managing Director in August 1965, a Senior Managing Director in May 1971 and Executive Vice President in June 1972, also heading the Processing Division from that December. He entered top management not from mining or smelting but by leading the processing business.
Selection
In May 1973 he succeeded Mitsuo Aikyo as President. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 1973, non-consolidated net sales were ¥140.7 billion and net income ¥2.1 billion. Fellow Executive Vice President Tsukasa Kobayashi had joined three years earlier, in 1935, and both became Senior Managing Directors together in May 1971, but Inai became Executive Vice President in June 1972 and Kobayashi in May 1973, a year apart. That one-year lead, gained while running the Processing Division, decided the order.
Initiatives
In December 1973, his first year, the company changed its name to Mitsubishi Metal. Continuing the staged closure of domestic mines begun under his predecessor, it spun off its domestic metal mining division in July 1976. Non-consolidated results were in the red for four straight years, starting with a ¥4.7 billion loss in FY ended March 1976 and running through FY ended March 1979, before returning to ¥2.0 billion in net income in FY ended March 1980. Net sales grew from ¥222.6 billion in FY ended March 1975 to ¥335.1 billion in FY ended March 1980.
