Background
Born in Shimane Prefecture in 1899, he graduated from Kyoto University in 1923 and joined Dainippon Celluloid. He transferred with the founding of Fuji Photo Film in 1934 and served as head of the Ashigara plant. He became a Director in 1936, an engineer who reached the board from the production floor for photosensitive materials. Many of the officers who moved from Dainippon Celluloid that same year, 1934, were engineers who had been chief plant engineers or laboratory heads, and Sakae Haruki belonged to that line.
Selection
Among the officers who moved from Dainippon Celluloid at the 1934 founding, Sakae Haruki became a Director in 1936, two years after the transfer. Makoto Fujisawa and Kisaburo Takeuchi, who also joined in 1934, became Managing Directors only in November 1950, a gap of 14 years. In November 1943, in the midst of the Pacific War, he became President.
Initiatives
His presidency lasted about 17 years, from November 1943 to June 1960. In the fiscal year ended October 1958, just before he stepped down, revenue was ¥14.3 billion and net income ¥770 million. Revenue grew to ¥21.4 billion in FY ended October 1961, after he left. This was a period when officers who had been there since the founding ran the company, and his successor, Setsutaro Kobayashi, also joined in 1934.
