Background

He joined after graduating from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1948 and was a career employee who worked in domestic sales of photosensitive materials. The three presidents before him all belonged to the generation that moved from Dainippon Celluloid at the founding in 1934, and Minoru Onishi appears to have been the first president from the postwar intake. He became President eight years after becoming a Director in June 1972.

In May 1980 he became President, succeeding Kusuo Hirata. In the fiscal year before he took office, ended October 1979, revenue was ¥312.2 billion and ordinary income ¥24.3 billion. In FY ended October 1980, the year he took office, revenue was ¥404.5 billion and ordinary income ¥45.3 billion, both above the previous year. He was promoted from Senior Managing Director, four years after becoming Managing Director in January 1976.

In FY ended October 1984 the company posted revenue of ¥566.3 billion and ordinary income of ¥95.7 billion. After shifting its fiscal year-end to March, in FY ended March 1996 consolidated revenue was ¥1,084.9 billion and net income ¥72.8 billion. In June 1996 he became Representative Director and Chairman.
