Background
Born in Ono City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1899, he graduated from Kwansei Gakuin in 1923, joined Iwai Sangyo, and after Dainippon Celluloid joined Fuji Photo Film in 1934. He served as head of Sales, became a Director in 1937, Senior Managing Director in November 1943 and Executive Vice President in June 1958. Amid colleagues who had been plant heads and laboratory heads, he reached the board from sales. The top major shareholders in April 1961 were trust banks and life insurers, led by Toyo Trust and Banking with 4.8%, while Dainippon Celluloid, which had founded the company, ranked fourth with 3.2%.

His predecessor, Sakae Haruki, was an engineer who graduated from Kyoto University and headed the Ashigara plant, while Setsutaro Kobayashi was a sales man who became a Director from head of Sales. He became Executive Vice President in June 1958 and President two years later, in June 1960. In the fiscal year ended October 1958, before he took office, revenue was ¥14.3 billion and net income ¥770 million.

Revenue, ¥21.4 billion in the fiscal year ended October 1961, the year after he took office, reached ¥100.2 billion in FY ended October 1970, the year before he stepped down, entering the ¥100 billion range. Net income also rose over the same period from ¥950 million to ¥7.57 billion. In FY ended October 1971, the year he stepped down, ordinary income was ¥10.6 billion, down from ¥12.1 billion the year before. In June 1971 he became Chairman.
