Background

A career employee, he joined Rohto Pharmaceutical in March 1974. He became an Executive Officer in May 2003, a Director in June 2004 and Managing Director in June 2008, 34 years after joining. In the fiscal year ended March 2010, his first year, the major shareholders were led by The Master Trust Bank of Japan at 7.64% and Japan Trustee Services Bank at 7.53%, followed by founding family holdings: Yamada Kosan at 3.45%, Yamasho Kosan at 2.95%, Kiyoko Yamada at 2.51% and Shigeko Yamada at 2.45%. The founding family still held control of the capital.

Education: Konan University, Faculty of Law (1974)

Selection

In June 2009 he became Director, President and COO, succeeding Kunio Yamada. Kunio Yamada simultaneously moved to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, creating a division of roles in which the founding family held the CEO role as Chairman and a career employee served as COO as President. Since the company's founding in 1949, every President had been named Yamada, so this was the first career-employee President. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥110.6 billion and operating income ¥11.6 billion, with profit down from ¥108.1 billion and ¥13.0 billion the year before.

Initiatives

In 2013 the company entered regenerative medicine, beginning development of products using allogeneic adipose-derived stem cells. In 2016 it allowed employees to take side jobs under the name "Outside Challenge Work." Consolidated net sales grew from ¥110.6 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year before he took office, to ¥171.7 billion in FY ended March 2018, and operating income from ¥11.6 billion to ¥19.1 billion. In FY ended March 2015 operating income fell from ¥16.8 billion to ¥13.2 billion despite higher sales, but recovered the following year. He died suddenly in office in 2018.
