Background
He joined Rohto Pharmaceutical in April 1980. He became a Director in June 1991, 11 years after joining, Senior Managing Director in June 1992, 12 years after, and Executive Vice President in June 1996, 16 years after. In the fiscal year ended March 2006, during his presidency, the major shareholders included Yamada Kosan at 3.55%, Yamasho Kosan at 3.06%, Nomura Trust and Banking (Shigeko Yamada trust account) at 2.72%, Kiyoko Yamada at 2.59% and Yasusada Yamada at 1.88%. Five of the top ten were individuals named Yamada and unlisted companies, and he appears to have had the founding family's capital behind him.

Consolidated net sales in the fiscal year ended March 2000, his first year, were ¥55.7 billion. In FY ended March 2003 the company posted a net loss of ¥1.30 billion, but returned to net income of ¥3.74 billion in FY ended March 2004. Sales grew steadily from then on, reaching ¥108.1 billion with operating income of ¥13.0 billion in FY ended March 2008, and ¥110.6 billion with net income of ¥6.1 billion in FY ended March 2009, the year he stepped down, nearly double his first year.
