Background
Born in Nara Prefecture in 1894, he graduated from the School of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University in March 1920. He became President at the founding of Rohto Pharmaceutical in September 1949. In the same month Eigoro Kaneko became Senior Managing Director, Sadao Tanaka a Director and Sadao Hatao a corporate auditor, so the lineup at the founding became the management team as it was. In the fiscal year ended March 1975 the major shareholders were led by Yasukuni Yamada at 13.35%, followed by Yasunobu Yamada at 7.95% and Yasusada Yamada at 7.91%, and Teruo Yamada also held 5.89%. He appears to have had capital backing, with shares divided among the family.
Selection
He was the first President, with no predecessor. Rohto Pharmaceutical was founded in September 1949, tracing its roots to Shintendo Yamada Yasutami Yakubo, started by Yasutami Yamada in February 1899, and he became President at that point, 29 years after graduating from Waseda University in March 1920. All the founding officers, from Senior Managing Director to corporate auditor, were appointed as of the same date in September 1949, with no executives brought in from outside. The corporate structure appears to have been built solely from the founding family and internal people.
Initiatives
His tenure lasted about 29 years; the company listed on the Second Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange in October 1961 and was assigned to the First Sections of the Tokyo and Osaka exchanges in October 1964. In August 1975 it acquired the right to use the trademark for the ointment Mentholatum from the bankrupt Omi Brotherhood. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥2.60 billion in the fiscal year ended July 1959 to ¥9.49 billion in FY ended March 1978, his last year as President. In April 1978 he stepped back to Chairman and handed the presidency to Yasukuni Yamada.
