Background
Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1926, he graduated from the University of Tokyo in March 1953 and joined Rohto Pharmaceutical in April of that year. Three months after joining, in July 1953, he became a Director, then served as General Manager of Advertising from June 1959 and head of the Administration Office from February 1962 before becoming Executive Vice President in November of that year. In the fiscal year ended March 1975 Yasukuni Yamada was the largest shareholder at 13.35%, followed by Yasunobu Yamada at 7.95%, Yasusada Yamada at 7.91%, Yasumasa Yamada at 7.87% and Yasuhiro Yamada at 7.85%. He held the largest stake within the family.
Selection
In April 1978, as Teruo Yamada became Chairman, he succeeded him as President. It had been 25 years since he joined in 1953 and 15 years since he became Executive Vice President. In the same month, April 1978, Heihachiro Yamamoto became Executive Vice President, and in June Yasuhiro Yamada became Managing Director, so the executive ranks were reshuffled all at once. Non-consolidated net sales were ¥9.23 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1977 and ¥9.49 billion in FY ended March 1978, so the change does not appear to have been prompted by a downturn.
Initiatives
In 1988 he acquired Mentholatum of the US, buying the brand, whose usage rights the company had licensed in 1975, at its source. Non-consolidated net sales grew 4.4-fold, from ¥9.49 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1978, his predecessor's last year, to ¥41.6 billion in FY ended March 1999. Net income fell to ¥0.61 billion in FY ended March 1993 and recovered to ¥2.19 billion in FY ended March 1998. In June 1999 he stepped back to Chairman and handed the presidency to Kunio Yamada.
