Background

He joined Paltek in April 1994 and moved to Softcreate in July 1996, serving as a group leader in the systems sales department. In May 2001 he joined the predecessor company Onsale as General Manager of E-Services, becoming COO in August 2002 and Representative Director and President in January 2004. It took him only two years and eight months from joining to the presidency. He also became a Director of Game Arts in December 2005 and its Representative Director and President in March 2008.

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in January 2004. It was an internal promotion from COO, and his predecessor Taizo Son moved to Chairman. In the FY ended December 2005, the year after he took office, the major shareholders were SoftBank BB at 44.55% and Asian Groove at 24.48%, so the top two held nearly 70%. With the majority of capital held outside, he served as President for about 22 years until stepping down in February 2026.

Initiatives

Consolidated net sales grew 6.3 times from ¥25.8 billion in the FY ended December 2012 to ¥163.1 billion in the FY ended December 2013. The in-house developed Puzzle & Dragons drove the sales growth. Consolidated net sales peaked at ¥173.1 billion in the FY ended December 2014. In 2013 the company invested in Finland's Supercell jointly with SoftBank, and sold its stake a year later. Shrinkage followed, and consolidated net sales fell to ¥92.3 billion in the FY ended December 2017, nearly halving in three years.
