Background

He joined Daimaru in April 1973 and became Representative Director, President and COO in May 2003. With the launch of the holding company in September 2007 he also became a director of J.Front Retailing, and in March 2010 became Representative Director and President of Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, the post-integration operating company. After a combined ten years as president of operating companies at Daimaru and Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, he moved to the presidency of the holding company.

In April 2013 he succeeded Shunichi Chamura as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended February 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,092.7 billion and operating income ¥30.9 billion, a return to growth in both from ¥941.4 billion and ¥21.6 billion in the FY ended February 2012. The presidency passed from Chamura, who came from the integration partner Matsuzakaya, to Yamamoto, from Daimaru, who had led the operating company Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores.

Initiatives

In the FY ended February 2014, his first year, consolidated operating income was ¥41.8 billion and net income ¥31.5 billion, up from ¥30.9 billion and ¥12.1 billion in the year before he took office. Operating income reached ¥49.5 billion in the FY ended February 2018, and in the FY ended February 2020 was ¥40.3 billion with net income of ¥21.2 billion. In 2020 the company made subsidiary PARCO a wholly owned subsidiary through a tender offer, ending the parent-subsidiary dual listing. Consolidated headcount fell from 8,323 in the year before he took office to 6,579 in the FY ended February 2020.
