Background

He joined Matsuzakaya in March 1969 and served as manager of the Shizuoka store from May 1998 and as Director, head of the Nagoya division and manager of the Nagoya store from May 1999. He advanced to Managing Director in May 2000, Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in May 2002, and Representative Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer and head of the corporate planning office in May 2004. He became Representative Director, President and Executive Officer of Matsuzakaya in May 2006 and Representative Director and President of Matsuzakaya Holdings in September 2006, having worked in both store operations and head-office corporate planning.

Selection

He joined the holding company at its launch in September 2007 as Director in charge of the Ginza redevelopment, and in March 2010 succeeded Tsutomu Okuda as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended February 2010, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥982.5 billion and operating income ¥18.6 billion, the second straight year of declines from ¥1,016.4 billion and ¥39.7 billion in the FY ended February 2008. Consolidated headcount had also fallen from 9,697 to 8,393.

In the FY ended February 2011, his first year, consolidated net sales were ¥950.1 billion and operating income ¥20.3 billion, lower sales but higher profit than the ¥982.5 billion and ¥18.6 billion of the year before he took office. In the FY ended February 2012 net sales were ¥941.4 billion, operating income ¥21.6 billion and net income ¥18.8 billion. In the FY ended February 2013, his final year, net sales were ¥1,092.7 billion, operating income ¥30.9 billion and net income ¥12.1 billion, with both sales and operating income above the year before he took office. In April 2013 he moved to Representative Director and Chairman, handing the presidency to Ryoichi Yamamoto.
