Background

He joined NCR Japan in April 1972 and, after Yokogawa-Hewlett-Packard and the Schlumberger group, joined Apple Computer Japan as marketing manager in August 1990. In June 1996 he became Vice President of Worldwide Consumer Marketing/SOHO at Apple's U.S. headquarters, and in April 1997 Representative Director and President of Apple Computer while also serving as a vice president of the U.S. headquarters. After a marketing career at foreign IT companies, he moved in February 2004 to McDonald's Holdings Company (Japan) as Representative Director, Vice Chairman and CEO.

Education: Tokai University, Faculty of Engineering (1972)

Selection

He joined McDonald's Japan in February 2004 as Representative Director, Vice Chairman and CEO, adding the presidency that May. He took office after founder Den Fujita, who had led the company since its founding in May 1971, became chairman, with career employee Yasuyuki Yagi serving in between. Before he took office, the FY ended December 2003 showed a net loss of ¥7.12 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥299.8 billion, and the FY ended December 2002 also a net loss of ¥2.33 billion, two straight years in the red. At the end of the FY ended December 2005, two U.S. McDonald's affiliates held 49.99% of the shares, and the appointment appears to have entrusted the turnaround to an outside executive.

Initiatives

The core of his tenure was converting company-operated stores to franchises. Selling company-operated stores to strong owners lightened the store assets and labor costs carried by headquarters, and consolidated operating income kept rising from ¥3.2 billion in the FY ended December 2005 to ¥28.2 billion in the FY ended December 2011. Consolidated net sales, however, declined after peaking at ¥395.0 billion in the FY ended December 2007, and were ¥294.7 billion in the FY ended December 2012, his last full year as president. In the FY ended December 2013, when he stepped down as president, operating income fell to ¥11.5 billion.
