Background

She joined McDonald's Canada in January 1991 and headed marketing in Russia and Ukraine from 1997 and back home from 2001. She came to Japan in October 2004 as Executive Officer for marketing at McDonald's Japan and advanced to Senior Executive Officer in April 2007. She left Japan to become Managing Director of McDonald's Malaysia in July 2009 and Regional Manager for Malaysia and Singapore in May 2012. Rather than a career employee of the Japanese company, she moved among overseas operations within the McDonald's system.

Education: University of Guelph, Faculty of Commerce
Education: McMaster University, Graduate School, MBA (1990)

Selection

In August 2013 she succeeded Eikoh Harada as President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended December 2012, just before she took office, consolidated net sales were ¥294.7 billion and operating income ¥24.8 billion, down in both from ¥302.3 billion and ¥28.2 billion the previous year. As of the FY ended December 2009, the Japanese company's major shareholders were McDonald's Restaurants of Canada Limited with 27.56% and McDonald's Restaurant Operations Inc. with 22.43%, the two together reaching 50%. The appointment appears to have been made by the shareholder side, choosing someone who had held posts across the U.S. headquarters' network.

Initiatives

In the FY ended December 2014, her second year, the company fell into the red with consolidated net sales of ¥222.3 billion, an operating loss of ¥6.7 billion and a net loss of ¥21.8 billion, and the damage widened in the FY ended December 2015 to net sales of ¥189.4 billion, an operating loss of ¥23.4 billion and a net loss of ¥34.9 billion. It returned to the black in the FY ended December 2016 with net sales of ¥226.6 billion and operating income of ¥6.9 billion, and in the FY ended December 2018, her final year, net sales were ¥272.2 billion and operating income ¥25.0 billion, exceeding the year before she took office in profit.
