Background
He joined McKinsey & Company in April 1987 and became a partner in December 1999. In September 2000 he became Representative Director of M3, and in 2005 Representative Director and President. After 13 years at McKinsey he went straight into founding a company without working at an operating business in between. In the FY ended March 2006 the largest shareholder was Sony Communication Network with 60.8%, with Tanimura personally second at 5.3%.

He is the first president, with no predecessor. He served as Representative Director from the company's founding in September 2000 and became Representative Director and President in 2005. In the FY ended March 2005, around the time he became president, consolidated net sales were ¥3.8 billion and ordinary income ¥1.7 billion, up 1.7-fold from ¥2.2 billion and ¥0.9 billion the previous year. The company began with the founder entrusted with management under Sony Communication Network, which held 60% of the shares.
Initiatives
In 2010 the company changed its name from "So-net M3" to "M3." In 2011 it acquired Doctors.net.uk of the U.K., establishing a pattern of overseas expansion by bringing local physician portals under its umbrella. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥3.8 billion in the FY ended March 2006 to ¥284.9 billion in the FY ended March 2025, while operating income peaked at ¥95.1 billion in the FY ended March 2022 and fell to ¥63.0 billion in the FY ended March 2025.
