Background

He joined Mitsubishi Bank (now The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ) in April 1986 and moved to Digital Garage in September 2001. He joined Kakaku.com's board in July 2002, becoming Director and CFO in April 2003 and Director and Executive Vice President in July 2005. In December 2005 he also became Representative Director and President of the payments subsidiary Kakaku.com Financial. His path ran from a bank through the parent company to handling the subsidiary's finances; he did not come up through the price-comparison site business.

Selection

In June 2006 he became president as his predecessor Yoshiteru Akita stepped back to Director and Senior Adviser. The promotion came three years and eleven months after he joined the board and eleven months after he became executive vice president. On the same board, Kaoru Hayashi, head of parent Digital Garage, sat as chairman, while Shonosuke Hata, his later successor, had only just become Director heading the product division. At a company that had completed its listing and market transfer, the officer who had overseen finance was chosen ahead of officers from the business side.

Initiatives

It was a decade of adding media through acquisitions. In April 2007 the company made eiga.com a subsidiary through a share purchase, then brought in Time Design in March 2014 and webCG in February 2015. On the capital side, in May 2009 Digital Garage transferred part of its stake to Culture Convenience Club, and the company became an equity-method affiliate of both. In May 2012 those shares passed to Dentsu. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥4.9 billion in the FY ended March 2007 to ¥41.3 billion in the FY ended March 2016, and operating income from ¥1.3 billion to ¥19.5 billion.
