Megmilk Snow Brand

The antitrust split and the founding of Snow Brand Milk Products (1950)

Key decision·1950· Megmilk Snow Brand — the full company history →

The company that was split, and the company doing the splitting

The 1950 split was not something management wanted. Inside a frame set by Occupation policy, the only discretion left to the company was where to draw the lines — and what it drew is revealing. Snow Brand Milk Products kept the trademark and the core of the dairy business, while leather, meat, pharmaceuticals and seed were stood up as separate legal entities. The order to break the company up was handled not as an occasion to give businesses away but as the work of regrouping them into several companies tied together by shareholdings. The speed of listing barely two months after incorporation reads the same way: a choice made in haste to rebuild a production base that had just been cut down.

Clover Dairy, the company it had been split from, came back in 1958, and Snow Brand Milk Products spread across the country as a full-line dairy. Snow Brand Foods, carved out at the same moment, was dissolved in April 2002 over the beef-labelling fraud. The line drawn in 1950 governed the shape of the group for the fifty-two years that followed.
