"発足5年目の1955年3月、東京都内の小学校9校の学校給食で集団食中毒が発生した。原因は北海道の雪印乳業八雲工場が製造した脱脂粉乳で、製造機の故障と停電により原料乳あるいは半濃縮乳が粉化前に長時間放置され、黄色ブドウ球菌が増殖したものと推定された。給食を食べた7,638人のうち患者は1,579人にのぼり、成長期の子どもたちに被害が集中したことは会社に重くのしかかった。北海道庁の検査条例以来、品質を何よりの旗印として伸びてきた雪印の名が、創業30年にして初めて大規模な食品事故と結びついた事件である。\n\n事件を受けて当時の社長佐藤貢氏は『全社員に告ぐ』と題する文書を全社に発し、品質への反省と出直しを求めた。この文書は以後、同社の品質管理の原点として語り継がれることになる。しかし、その記憶はその後の組織のなかで保たれなかった。八雲工場食中毒事件は社内で風化し、その教訓を活かせなかったことが2000年の食中毒事件の発生につながった。同じ黄色ブドウ球菌による事故が45年をへて繰り返されるまで、この事件が社の内外で顧みられる機会はほとんどなかった。",
