Background

He graduated from Kobe Higher Commercial School in 1924 and joined Meiji Sugar Manufacturing that year. He served as auditor of Zen Meiji Fudosan in 1957 and President of Meiji Yushi in November 1961, moving among affiliates of the Meiji group. He moved to Meiji Milk Products in October 1964, joining as head of the President's office, and became Executive Vice President the following November. He was appointed from outside the company, entering as Executive Vice President without passing through any plant or sales office.

Education: Kobe Higher Commercial School (now Kobe University, Faculty of Economics) (1924)

Selection

In December 1966 he succeeded Yoshio Kokusho as President, two years and two months after joining Meiji Milk Products, in contrast to most Directors in the same officer listing, who joined between 1937 and 1942 and took more than 20 years to reach the board. His predecessor Kokusho moved to Chairman that month and remained a Representative Director. The appointment appears to have placed at the top of the parent someone who had been entrusted with running affiliates.

Initiatives

Around the time he took office, a divisional system spread, with officers placed in charge of each product group: a food division in October 1965, an ice cream division in October 1966 and a D.S. division in November 1967. In November 1971 Senior Managing Director Masanori Ono, Director Jiro Kikuchi and auditor Shoji Okada stepped down at the same time. In May 1972 he left the presidency, and Chairman Yoshio Kokusho returned as President. The three who had stepped down all returned to the board during 1972.
