Background

He was born in Saga Prefecture in 1882. In April 1921 he founded the general partnership Ezaki Shoten in Osaka, and in February 1922 launched the nutritional confection Glico at Mitsukoshi Osaka. In February 1929 the business was reorganized as Ezaki Shoten, and that year he became President. He was a founder who led the business he had started, holding the presidency until moving to Chairman in November 1973.

Selection

He became President upon the incorporation of the shop he had founded, and had no predecessor. In 1922 he became representative partner of the Ezaki partnership, and with the reorganization of February 1929 became President. He served as President for 44 years thereafter and became Chairman in November 1973. His successor was not from the founding family but Takeo Okubo, who had joined in 1951 and headed a subsidiary.

Initiatives

He created Bisco in February 1933, and in February 1953 the company offered its shares over the counter in Osaka. Starting with ice cream in March 1957, it expanded into chocolate in February 1958 and chewing gum and curry in 1960, reshaping a lineup of nutritional confectionery alone into that of a general food company. In March 1965 it stopped pushing products onto the trade and switched to managing by sell-through to the final point of sale, consolidating its branches into seven. In October 1966 it merged seven dairy subsidiaries to form Glico Kyodo Nyugyo.
