Background
He was born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1912. He graduated from Osaka University of Commerce in 1936 and joined Ezaki Glico in 1951. He became Managing Director in 1962. In November 1968 he also became President of Glico Chikusan, and in November 1970 left the parent's board for a time. In May 1972 he became President of Glico Kyodo Nyugyo, continuing to be entrusted with running subsidiaries.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in November 1973. His predecessor was founder Riichi Ezaki, who moved to Chairman that month. In the same month Katsuhisa Ezaki of the founding family became Representative Director and Executive Vice President, and after eight years and seven months in that post he succeeded to the presidency in June 1982. Okubo was a career employee who took 22 years from joining to the presidency, and the appointment appears to have entrusted him with the company until it passed to the founding family.
Initiatives
During his tenure he dispersed production sites, establishing Tottori Glico in June 1975 and Mie Glico in September 1979. In March 1982 the company partnered with Générale Biscuit to set up Generale Biscuit Glico France S.A. in France. The following April it made Glico Eiyo Shokuhin a subsidiary through a share acquisition. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥79.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1976 to ¥122.2 billion in FY ended March 1982, and ordinary profit from ¥9.4 billion to ¥15.4 billion.
