Background
In June 1999 he established E-Mercury Ltd. and became a Director, and when it was converted into a stock company in October 2000 he became Representative Director and President. The company began by operating the job information service "Find Job !", launched the social networking site "mixi" in 2004, and changed its name to mixi in February 2006. The founder's stake remains large: in the fiscal year ended March 2026, Kenji Kasahara is still the largest shareholder with 49.95%.

He led the company from its founding in June 1999 and was its first head, with no predecessor. In February 2006 he changed the company name to mixi, and that September it listed on the TSE Mothers market. In its first year as a listed company, the fiscal year ended March 2007, net sales were ¥5.2 billion, ordinary profit ¥2.1 billion and net income ¥1.1 billion, so it entered the capital markets while staying profitable. The following year, FY ended March 2008, net sales were ¥10.1 billion and ordinary profit ¥3.8 billion, doubling in scale within two years of listing.
Initiatives
Consolidated net sales grew to ¥16.9 billion in FY ended March 2011, then fell for two straight years, to ¥13.3 billion in FY ended March 2012 and ¥12.6 billion in FY ended March 2013. Ordinary profit also fell from ¥3.0 billion in FY ended March 2011 to ¥2.6 billion in FY ended March 2013. In May 2008 he also became chairman of Shanghai Mingxi Network Technology, extending into China. In June 2013 he stepped down as President to become Chairman, ending seven years and four months as President.
