Background
After graduate studies in law, he joined Osaka Gas in April 1948. He became head of the Kobe branch and Kobe sales office in May 1970, moved to head of the Corporate Planning Office in September of that year, became a Director in September 1971 and head of the President's Office in October of that year. He rose to Managing Director in March 1973, Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in June 1976, and Executive Vice President in June 1977, a career that moved back and forth between branch sales and headquarters planning and the President's Office.
Selection
As of June 1979 there were two Executive Vice Presidents: Hiroki Chujo, appointed in May 1975, and Onishi, appointed in June 1977. Masahiro Doi, who joined in the same 1948 cohort, had been about a year ahead, becoming a Director in September 1970 and Managing Director in September 1971, but he returned to Director in June 1976, the same month Onishi rose to Representative Director and Senior Managing Director, reversing their order. In April 1981 Onishi succeeded Hiroshi Yasuda as President.
Initiatives
He established Ogis-RI in June 1983, and the Himeji plant began operation in March 1984. The natural gas conversion that started in 1975 was completed in December 1990, and he oversaw the latter half of the 15-year project. Net sales grew from ¥594.4 billion in the FY ended March 1982 to ¥626.6 billion in the FY ended March 1985, and ordinary income rose from ¥49.3 billion to ¥62.3 billion over the same period.
