Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Kyoto Imperial University in July 1916 and joined Mitsui & Co. that same month. After 14 years at the trading house, he moved to Osaka Gas in April 1930. He became a Director in January 1940, ten years after joining, and Senior Managing Director in July 1943. Though an engineering graduate, he spent the first half of his career at a trading company, and had been at Osaka Gas for 19 years when he became President.

Education: Kyoto Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering (1916)

Selection

He became Senior Managing Director in July 1943 and President in March 1949. Osaka Gas had just merged 14 gas companies, including those of Kobe and Kyoto, in October 1945, expanding its service area across the whole Kinki region. The company swollen by the merger was taken over by the most senior figure in the internal hierarchy, who had been a Director since before the war. He became Representative Director in July 1951.

Initiatives

In June 1949, three months after taking office, he established Osaka Gas Chemicals. He also became a Director of Kinki Coke Sales in July of that year and a Director of Asahi Broadcasting in March 1951, surrounding the city gas business with affiliated companies. In April 1957 he served as chairman of the Osaka Industrial Association. In February 1960 he handed the presidency to Nagatomi Fujisaka and became Representative Director and Chairman, also serving as Chairman of Kansai Tar Products.
