Background

He graduated from the Higher Commercial Department of Kwansei Gakuin in March 1924 and joined Osaka Gas in 1926. He became a Director in May 1947, Representative Director in July 1951, Managing Director in February 1952, and Executive Vice President in August 1959, reaching the presidency 34 years after joining. Unlike his predecessor Takejiro Iguchi, who had come over from Mitsui & Co., he was a commerce graduate and career employee with no experience outside the company.

Education: Kwansei Gakuin, Higher Course, Commerce (1924)

Selection

In February 1960 he became President at the same time as Takejiro Iguchi stepped back to Representative Director and Chairman. He had become Executive Vice President only in August 1959, and Iwao Nishiyama, who became Representative Director and Senior Managing Director that same month, moved up to Executive Vice President in February 1960, lining up as next in line. Chairman, President and Executive Vice President were all reshuffled in the same month, handing over in one stroke the Iguchi regime that had lasted 11 years.

Initiatives

During his tenure he accumulated posts at affiliates, becoming a Director of Amagasaki Coke Industry in May 1963, President of Kinki Coke Sales in November of that year, auditor of Osaka Prefecture Urban Development in February 1965, and Chairman of Osaka Gas Building in February 1967. In March 1965 he established Osaka Gas Urban Development. The move to switch feedstock to LNG did not begin during his tenure; Brunei LNG first reached the Senboku plant in December 1972, under his successor Iwao Nishiyama.
