Background

Born in Hyogo in 1903, he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Imperial University in 1927 and joined Jomo Electric Power in April of that year. He entered Hokkaido Electric Power as a Director in November 1952, becoming Managing Director in May 1956 and Executive Vice President in May 1960. The company, founded only in 1951, brought in an engineering graduate who had worked at power companies on Honshu not as a rank-and-file employee but as a board member.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Engineering (now University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering) (1927)

Selection

In May 1966 he succeeded Seitaro Okamatsu as President. Okamatsu moved to Chairman the same month and remained a Representative Director. In the fiscal year ended March 1966, the year before he took over, net sales were ¥35.456 billion and net income was ¥2.784 billion, net income being nearly flat from ¥2.724 billion in the FY ended March 1964. The handover went to an engineer who had served six years as Executive Vice President, and appears to have passed leadership from a predecessor with a government background to an in-house practitioner.

Initiatives

Over his eight years in office, net sales grew 2.2 times, from ¥35.456 billion in the FY ended March 1966 to ¥79.7 billion in the FY ended March 1974. Net income peaked during his tenure at ¥4.3 billion in the FY ended March 1971 and stood at ¥2.9 billion in the FY ended March 1974, while ordinary income also fell from ¥6.8 billion in the FY ended March 1973 to ¥3.9 billion. In May 1974 he moved to Chairman and passed the presidency to Komo Yotsuyanagi.
