Background

He joined Hokkaido Electric Power in April 1981 and became Corporate Officer and General Manager of the Human Resources and Labor Relations Department in July 2011. He rose to Senior Executive Officer in June 2014, Director, Managing Executive Officer and General Manager of the Power Network Division in June 2015, and Representative Director, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Power Network Division in June 2016, adding the post of President of the Transmission and Distribution Company in April 2018. His main areas were human resources and power networks, and he reached Executive Vice President without ever heading the generation side.

Selection

In June 2019 he succeeded Akihiko Mayumi as President. On taking office he also became President and Executive Officer and General Manager of the Nuclear Power Promotion Division, placing nuclear power directly under the president. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took over, consolidated net sales were ¥752.2 billion (as initially announced) and ordinary income was ¥30.2 billion, ordinary income having risen for two straight years from ¥12.6 billion in the FY ended March 2017. Promoted from President of the Transmission and Distribution Company, he took personal charge of advancing nuclear power.

Initiatives

In the first half of his four years in office, consolidated operating income grew, reaching ¥42.4 billion in the FY ended March 2020 and ¥53.8 billion in the FY ended March 2021. In the second half it fell to ¥25.0 billion in the FY ended March 2022, and in the FY ended March 2023 the company posted an operating loss of ¥22.5 billion and a net loss of ¥22.2 billion on net sales of ¥888.9 billion. He kept the roles of President and Executive Officer and General Manager of the Nuclear Power Promotion Division after re-election in June 2022, and in June 2023 handed the presidency to Susumu Saito and became Representative Director and Chairman.
