Background

He is a career employee who joined Kyushu Electric Power in April 1975 and worked nowhere else until stepping down as President. He continued to head the Thermal Power Headquarters after becoming Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2011, overseeing both corporate planning and thermal power before becoming President.

Selection

In April 2012 he succeeded Toshio Manabe as President. Following the previous year's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident, all of Kyushu Electric's nuclear units had been shut down, and in the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2012, the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥184.9 billion and a net loss of ¥166.4 billion. With the need to make up for the idle nuclear capacity with thermal power, the Executive Vice President who also headed the Thermal Power Headquarters moved up.

Initiatives

In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2013, losses deepened to a consolidated operating loss of ¥299.4 billion and a net loss of ¥332.5 billion. In May 2013 the company raised residential electricity rates and went ahead with applications for restarts, led by Sendai Units 1 and 2. Sendai Unit 1 became the first reactor in Japan to restart, and in the FY ended March 2016 the company returned to the black with consolidated operating profit of ¥120.3 billion and net income of ¥73.5 billion. In the FY ended March 2018, his final year, consolidated revenue was ¥1,960.4 billion and operating profit ¥103.1 billion.
