Background

He joined Kyushu Electric Power in April 1981. He rose to Executive Officer and deputy head of the Corporate Planning Headquarters in June 2016 and Director, Managing Executive Officer and head of the Corporate Strategy Division in June 2017, taking charge of company-wide planning. In June 2018, 37 years after joining, he became Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer. It took him one year from joining the board to the presidency, and he was promoted while still in charge of corporate planning.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1981)

Selection

In June 2018 he succeeded Michiaki Uriu as Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2018, consolidated revenue was ¥1,960.4 billion and ordinary profit ¥73.7 billion, with ordinary profit down 20% from ¥94.2 billion the previous year. It was just before the legal unbundling of the transmission and distribution division scheduled for April 2020, when the system of supplying power as a regional monopoly would be dismantled. The appointment appears to have assigned someone who had handled planning as head of the Corporate Strategy Division to prepare for the regulatory changeover.

Initiatives

In April 2020 the company spun off its transmission and distribution division to comply with legal unbundling. With soaring fuel prices, it posted a consolidated ordinary loss of ¥86.6 billion and a net loss of ¥56.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2023. The following FY ended March 2024 recovered to ordinary profit of ¥238.2 billion and net income of ¥166.4 billion, and in the FY ended March 2025, his final year, the company still secured ordinary profit of ¥194.7 billion. He set out a management vision with 2035 as its target year and announced investment on the scale of ¥1.5 trillion in decarbonization.
