He is a career employee who joined Yamato Holdings in April 1988. He became an Executive Officer in April 2015 and that same month also became Representative Director, President and Executive Officer of Yamato Transport. In June 2017 he became a Director and Executive Officer of the holding company. After four years as President of the operating company that runs TA-Q-BIN, he rose to President of the holding company 31 years after joining.

In April 2019 he became Representative Director, President and Executive Officer, succeeding Masaki Yamauchi, who moved to Chairman. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,625.3 billion and operating income ¥58.3 billion, just after the recovery from the low of ¥34.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2017. As President of Yamato Transport he had carried out the across-the-board rate increase and volume cap, and he was entrusted with continuing the turnaround.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2021 the company recorded the highest results of his tenure, with consolidated operating income of ¥92.1 billion and net income of ¥56.7 billion. Operating income then fell to ¥40.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2024 and ¥14.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2025. In August 2023 Yutaka Nagao set out a policy of cutting back resources devoted to areas that could not be called core. The company began a mail-drop delivery service collaboration with Japan Post, but it turned into a lawsuit over performance of the agreement. In the fiscal year ended March 2026 revenue hit a record ¥1,865.7 billion, but operating income was just ¥28.3 billion.
