Background

He joined Yamato Transport in April 1970. He served as head of the Chugoku branch from June 1997 and as a Director and head of the Kansai branch from June 1999, handling branch sales. In June 2004 he became Managing Executive Officer in charge of personnel and operational improvement, and in April 2005 moved to head of the CSR Promotion Office in charge of personnel and information. From April 2006 he was in charge of the delivery, home convenience and group support businesses. He held 24,000 shares, not a position backed by capital.

Selection

In June 2006 he became Representative Director, President and Executive Officer, succeeding Keiji Aritomi. Yamato Transport had split off all its businesses in November 2005 to become a pure holding company, changing its name to Yamato Holdings, and the change came six months after the transition. Aritomi had become President in June 1997, Chairman in June 2003 and Chairman and President in November 2005, and became Chairman in June 2006. Makoto Kigawa, who joined from Mizuho Corporate Bank in April 2005, also became Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2006.

Initiatives

During his tenure consolidated operating revenue rose from ¥1,144.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to ¥1,236.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011. The company signed strategic alliances with the NYK Line group on integrated international import-export logistics in May 2006 and with the Marui Group on furniture and appliance distribution in May 2007. In April 2008 it split off Yamato Transport's express business into Yamato Global Express, and in August that year divided Yamato Logistics into two companies for domestic and international logistics. In January 2010 it launched TA-Q-BIN in Singapore, and took a management stake in Shanghai Bashi Logistics to start TA-Q-BIN in Shanghai as well.
