Background

He is a career employee who joined Yamato Holdings in April 1984. He became an Executive Officer in April 2005 and served as President of Yamato Logistics from April 2008. In April 2011 he became President of Yamato Transport and in June that year a Director of the holding company. After leading the logistics subsidiary and then the TA-Q-BIN operating company in succession, he reached the presidency of the holding company 31 years after joining.

Education: Kanazawa University, Faculty of Letters (1984)

Selection

In April 2015 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Makoto Kigawa, who moved to Representative Director and Chairman at the same time. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,396.7 billion and operating income ¥68.9 billion, the highest of his predecessor's four years. He had overseen the TA-Q-BIN frontline for four years as President of Yamato Transport from April 2011. The appointment appears to have entrusted the growing volume to someone who knew the operating company.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2017 consolidated revenue rose to ¥1,466.8 billion, while operating income halved from ¥68.5 billion the year before to ¥34.9 billion. In response he moved to the first across-the-board rate increase for TA-Q-BIN in 27 years and a volume cap. Operating income was only ¥35.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2018, recovering to ¥58.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2019 with revenue of ¥1,625.3 billion when he handed over to his successor. Over his four fiscal years revenue rose from ¥1,396.7 billion to ¥1,625.3 billion, but operating income fell from ¥68.9 billion to ¥58.3 billion.
