Background
He joined Fuji Bank in April 1973 and became Managing Director of Mizuho Corporate Bank in April 2004. He joined Yamato Holdings in April 2005, becoming Managing Director that June and Representative Director and Managing Director in November. From March 2007 he served as Representative Director and President of Yamato Transport. An outsider who moved over after 32 years in finance, he reached the top of the holding company six years later.

In April 2011 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Kaoru Seto. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥1,236.5 billion and operating income ¥64.3 billion, a recovery from ¥1,200.8 billion and ¥61.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2010. Having served four years as President of Yamato Transport from March 2007, he moved up to the holding company after leading the operating company. The sequence appears to have been to test a banker at the operating company before entrusting him with the whole group.
Initiatives
Over his four fiscal years consolidated revenue rose from ¥1,236.5 billion to ¥1,396.7 billion. Operating income grew only from ¥64.3 billion to ¥68.9 billion, falling to ¥63.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2014. The operating margin slipped from 5.2% to 4.9%. Without managing to turn the growth in volume into profit, he handed the presidency to Masaki Yamauchi in April 2015.
