Background
He graduated from the School of Commerce at Waseda University in March 1938 and joined Nagoya Railroad in May that year. He became a Director in November 1963, Managing Director in November 1966 and Executive Vice President in November 1967, becoming President 33 years after joining and after four years as Executive Vice President. When he became President he also served as President of Meitetsu Marina Hotel and as a member of the Aichi Prefectural Labor Relations Commission. He was a career employee who joined Nagoya Railroad directly rather than through one of the merged companies.
Selection
In November 1971 Motoo Tsuchikawa moved to Chairman and Kotaro Takeda became President. In the same month the four Executive Vice Presidents, Kazuo Funahashi, Sotoshige Takeuchi, Shunichi Yogo and Mitsuo Jinno, all stepped back to Director and Senior Adviser. Funahashi and Takeuchi had become Executive Vice Presidents in November 1965, and Yogo, Jinno and Takeda in November 1967; in this change, one of the vice presidents of equal rank moved up to President while the remaining four became advisers.
Initiatives
His ten years in office coincided with line extensions and through-services. In August 1978 the extension of the Seto Line into Sakaemachi was completed and opened, and in July 1979 the Toyota Line (Akaike to Umetsubo) was completed and through-service with the Nagoya City Transportation Bureau began. The Chita New Line (Fuki to Utsumi) opened in full in June 1980. In the group expanded by his predecessor he served as Chairman of Meitetsu Real Estate, Chubu Kaihatsu and Meitetsu Store, and as President of Taiheiyo Enkai Ferry, Chubu Ise-Shima Kaihatsu and Nagoya Airport Building, and in March 1976 became Vice Chairman of the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
