Background
He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1940 and joined the Bank of Japan in April that year. He served as Director-General of the Examination Bureau from May 1967 and moved to Nagoya Railroad in May 1970. His name does not appear in the board list of the 1969 edition of the directory, and in the 1970 edition he is listed as Executive Vice President. He was not a career employee who had worked on the railway or in internal posts but an executive brought in from the financial side.
Selection
At Meitetsu he spent 11 years as Executive Vice President. He was entrusted not with the railway itself but with the group's retail and related businesses: Director of Tokyo Meitetsu Department Store from June 1970 and of Tokyo Mersa from August that year, President of Nippon Rent-A-Car Chubu from February 1971, President of Meitetsu Okazaki Shopping Center from April 1972 and President of Shin-Gifu Department Store from April 1975. In May 1975 he became Vice Chairman of the Chubu Economic Federation. In the 1980 edition's board list he still ranked just below Kotaro Takeda, and he moved up to President the following year, 1981.
Initiatives
He became President in 1981 and served six years until handing over to Seitaro Taniguchi in 1987. The year after he took office, in December 1982, the Hashima Line (Egira to Shin-Hashima) began operations. Taniguchi, his fellow Executive Vice President in the 1980 edition of the directory, was a career employee who joined in 1946, and the presidency returned from a manager who came from the Bank of Japan to one raised inside the company.
