Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1978 and moved to East Japan Railway Company in the April 1987 breakup and privatization. He became Director and General Manager of Personnel in June 2006, Managing Director in June 2008 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2012. Climbing the executive ladder from the director in charge of personnel, he spent 40 years at JNR and the company before becoming President. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, when he was Executive Vice President, the major shareholders were led by Mizuho Bank with 4.99%, with trust banks and city banks at the top.

He became President in April 2018, succeeding Tetsuro Tomita. In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, consolidated operating revenue was ¥2,950.1 billion and operating income ¥481.3 billion, with operating revenue up for five straight years since the fiscal year ended March 2013. Like his predecessor he had been hired by Japanese National Railways, and he was promoted after six years as Executive Vice President. The appointment carried on both the core business, which had kept growing, and the cultivation of non-railway businesses.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2021 consolidated operating revenue fell 40% to ¥1,764.5 billion from ¥2,946.6 billion the year before, with an operating loss of ¥520.4 billion and a net loss of ¥577.9 billion. The following fiscal year, ended March 2022, also brought an operating loss of ¥153.9 billion and a net loss of ¥94.9 billion, for combined net losses of ¥672.8 billion over the two years. Across those two years the company reorganized around two-axis management of railways and lifestyle solutions and pressed ahead with Takanawa Gateway City on the site of the former Shinagawa rail yard. In his final year, the fiscal year ended March 2024, operating revenue recovered to ¥2,730.1 billion and operating income to ¥345.2 billion.
